Things to do ....
Coasts/Beaches –ideally situated for the superb sandy beaches with rock pools to the west and the Normandy Landing beaches around Caen, all within an hour’s drive. Granville is a traditional holiday resort with excellent beaches and a wide range of ′chic′ shops and eating places. The ferry can be taken from Granville to the Channel Islands. The revered site of Le Mont Saint Michel is spectacular and can be seen for miles along the coast.
Golf – Lac de la Dathee (25mins) offers an 18 hole course and has a lovely walk around the lake. There are other courses within an hour′s drive, including the coastal course at Granville.
Towns – Le Nid d’Hibou is situated about halfway between St Lo and Vire (25mins). Both offer a range of small shops and large supermarkets. Vire has a market on Friday whereas St Lo is on Saturday. The town of Villedieu-les-Poêles is renowned for its copper making industry and shops. There are several small museums here which are worth a look and it has a vibrant market on Tuesdays. The town of Caen is about an hour way and has a huge shopping area as well as many historical sites. The Memorial de Caen is well worth a visit. Bayeux, with its famous tapestry and cathedral is about 45 minutes away.
Activities – swimming pools can be found locally at St Lo, Vire and Villedieu les Poêles. For the more adventurous, there is a bungyjump from the Viaduc de la Souleuvre, originally an impressive metallic railway viaduct. For the less daring, the grounds have a network of walks and picnic areas. There are also many local walks including in the Forest of St Sever which is a short distance away.Canoeing, cycling and horse-riding can be found locally and many visitors enjoy a leisurely ride on the velorail.
